Hon. Eduardo Dimacuha

City Mayor, Batangas City

             Thru: Mr. Oliver C. Gonzales

             Environment and Natural Resources Officer

Dear Sir:

      The United Nations-mandated commemoration of World Environment Day on June 5 of every year started in the Philippines only in 2001.  The UN-convened WED-Philippines Network decided the following year to root the commemoration and its consciousness campaigns deeply in localities, with the perennial Philippine theme seeking to build “Green Families and Green Communities.” We then started to rotate the national site of the WED commemoration which had been held twice at the Ninoy Aquino Nature Park in Quezon City. In June 2003 we were in Puerto Princesa, Cagayan de Oro in 2004, Baguio in 2005, Tagbilaran in 2006, and Davao City last year.

     The Annual Assembly of WED-Phil. last year received a lone nomination from member-organization Mother Earth Foundation for Batangas City to be voted as the host of WED for 2008.  The host city of any year undertakes activities for raising environment consciousness among the local stakeholders, in partnership with local civil society environmentalist and civic groups, academic institutions and other national and local government instrumentalities. We do have to apologize for the short notice, but there is actualy enough time for a significant commemoration.. Unless you totally reject our vote, Batangas City will, at the minimum:

1.      Host the “Green Families and Green Communities Festival” at an open space on the whole day Sunday, June 4, 2006 with turn-out from various communities in the city; a “green expo” of environment-friendly ;

2.      Host the multi-nationality ceremony “Handshakes and Hugs for Earth Synergy” in the evening of June 5, 2006, the exact World Environment Day;

3.      Host the annual assembly of WED-Philippines, sponsoring plane/boat fare and accommodation  expenses for a total of 7-10 guests from WED-national and some regions of the country. The Assembly will choose a city in the Visayas to be next host.

The attached separate documents carry backgrounders and specifics on the annual commemoration.  I would like to seek an appointment with you, Sir, and the city’s environment concerns officer, on a day of your choice within the coming week to discuss more specifics. Please have your response to this request e-mailed to dingreyes@yahoo.com.

Sincerely yours,

P.S.  I bring warmest regards from my fellow WED chair emeritus and our

         common namesake,  Mayor Edward Hagedorn of Puerto Princesa City
